Canada gives Permanent Residency to 184,000 Immigrants

Canada is right on track to admit its desired number of immigrants in 2021. Almost 39,500 new permanent residents could make it to the country in July. This is 4,000 more than June. In total so far this year, 184,000 immigrants have been admitted to Canada confirmed by the immigration minister Marco Mendicino to Reuters in an interview on 13 August. This makes sure that the target of 401,000 may be achieved at the end of the year. Furthermore, Canada has also so far invited through express entry a total of 102,779.

The minister said, “We’re ahead of where we expected to be at this point in the year, and we are going to continue to accelerate the pace of landing new permanent residents,” Mendicino said in a telephone interview. “We are going to deliver on that goal.”

The Canadian government has tabled the 2021‒2023 Immigration Levels Plan that will allow 401,000 immigrants in 2021, 411,000 in 2022, and 421,000 in 2023.  This is Canada’s most ambitious immigration program in history. The IRCC spends about $2 billion per year on grants and donations linked to settlement initiatives, making it the world’s greatest. Furthermore, the federal government has also recently reserved CAD100 Million for the integration of the newcomers.

Though Canada is well on track to achieve 401,000 permanent residents this year, still the pace must continue in order to complete this target. First of all, any month lacking behind the desired number can create a big backlog in upcoming months. Secondly, the last time when Canada accepted 400,000 immigrants, was in the 1900s. Thirdly, with borders closed for much of the COVID-19 pandemic, the number of new permanent residents fell to 185,000 in 2020 from 341,000 in 2019.

Since Canada is extending the limits to make immigration targets meet, the following extraordinary measures have been taken:

  • Canada welcomed 39,500 immigrants immigrants in July 2021,whereas as total of 184,000 newcomers so far this year,
  • This week, Immigration Minister Marco Mendicino announced a one-year extension to the federal government’s immigration agreement with Newfoundland and Labrador,
  • Candidates of permanent residency programs having approved PR status will now be able to travel to Canada from 21 June 2021,
  • Fully vaccinated tourists from all countries can enter September 7,
  • Meanwhile 9 airports accepting international flights,
  • Fully vaccinated U.S. tourists can enter Canada starting August 9,
  • Lifting flight ban from the flights from Pakistan,
  • Hotel quarantine policy ending August 9.
  • Fully vaccinated children of Canadians, and other exempt travellers to have amended quarantine starting August 9,
  • Immigrants support Canada is on, as the federal government reserved CAD100 Million for the integration of the newcomers.

Considering all measures taken by the Canadian government and IRCC, the draws of the Federal Skilled Worker Program and Federal Skilled Trades Program seem to be released in near future.

Since Canada has so far invited through express entry a total of 102,779, it is expected that it would reach the target of 108,500 in 2021 till September.
