Sweden Work Permit Requirements and Application Process

If you are a resident of non-EU states and want to do a job in Sweden, then you will go for a work permit for sure. Still, there are some conditions by which you can be exempted from the work permit which are as follows:

  • Own a permanent residence permit,
  • Own a work permit specified for the job as a researcher,
  • Have a residence permit for your studies,
  • Are an EU resident,
  •  You are a refugee seeker and own an AT-Und. You will be free from the strictness to hold a work permit.

Guidelines

If you are planning to work in Sweden, then must go through these instructions:

Criteria for the work permit

In order to attain a work permit, you will have to fulfill the criteria. The basic requirement is to have one job. You will be ineligible for the permit if you will have two jobs or more than this. The work permit is essential regardless of these things:

  • The job you have in Swede or in abroad,
  • Offered a job by an agency which will give you resources to a company in Sweden,
  • You have shifted to a company in Sweden.

To get a work permit, you must have:

  • A job offer from a company in Sweden,
  • A workable passport,
  • Offered the conditions of the job that are organized by Swedish agreements. Alternatively, these must be acceptable within the company or industry,
  • Offered the gross pay that is organized by Swedish agreements or must be acceptable within the company,
  • Your salary must be that enough to support yourself. The minimum criteria for it are SEK 13,000 should be your gross pay without taxes,
  • Have an employer who will assure you to give pension, medical, and life insurance.

Criteria for the job for less than 3 months

If the duration of your job is less than 3 months, then you must have:

  • Work permit,
  • A visa.

Registration in the Swedish population register

To get your name registered  in the Swedish population register, you must have:

  • Permit for the minimum duration of 1 year,
  • Residency in Sweden for a minimum of1 year.

The importance of registration

It is essential to get the name registered in the Swedish population register. The reason is you can easily enjoy the social rights and facilities in the state as their citizens do. 

Important note!

If you have a permit for the duration of less than 1 year, then you will not get registration in the Swedish population register. In this case, you must have insurance to secure yourself regarding any illness or incident. 

Application procedure for the work permit

According to the rules, the issuance of the work permit must be before your arrival in Sweden. In the online application procedure, all guidelines about the application will be given to the applicant. That will lead you to more accuracy. Furthermore, that will increase your chances for selection.

Step 1: Job offer

You must have an offer of a job in Sweden to get a work permit. The advertisement for the job by the employer must be done 10 days before your selection in Sweden, EEA/EU, and Switzerland. 

Step 2: Start-up of the application by the employer

The application procedure will be initiated by your employer. He/she will start up the application after sending you an offer for the job. The employer will need some of your basic data, for example, name, birth date, qualification, citizenship, and email address

Step 3: You get an email

When your employer wants to give you a job offer, you will get an email from him. In the email, there will instructions for you on the application procedure. Below are some basic things that you will mention in your application:

  • Basic information of yourself,
  • Your family is traveling with you or not,
  • If the family is also with you, you are applying for the permit of you and your family,

The applicant must go through the job conditions in the offer. He/she must be sure that the conditions mentioned here are already discussed/accepted by him/her and their employer.

Step 4: Documentation

With the application, the applicant will attach the following documents:

  •  The copies of the pages of your passport
  • A power of attorney if you are leading the application. 

Documentation for extending a work permit

If you have applied for the work permit extension and you are working for a job as personal assistance, then submit some extra documents. You will have to submit a copy of the commitment issued by the Swedish Social Insurance Agency (Forsakringskassan). This commitment will reveal that you are under someone working as an assistant. 

Required Documentations if you are applying for your family

If you and your family will be traveling together and you are applying for the permit for you and your family at the same time. Then you will have to submit:

  • For the partners having cohabitation, document revealing that their residence is in the same address in their state,
  • Kids’ birth certificates,
  • If the one parent is not traveling with the child, a permission letter from him/her. This letter will show that he/she is giving permission to take the child with the parent,
  • The documents revealing that children above the age of 21 also need their parents for financial support,
  • For the adopted kid, documents supporting/confirming adoption,
  • If the applicant is leading all the family members over age 18, then he/she will give power of attorney.

Important consideration

Regarding documents, keep these things in mind:

  • The documents must be translated into English or Swedish. You can make a translation from any professional fo more accuracy,
  • Along with the original document, must submit the copy with translation,

Expenses

You will have to pay charges to submit the application. Without paying them, you cannot submit the application. You can pay them via visa or MasterCard.  

After the submission of the application, you and your employer will get an email notification. This email will confirm that your application is successfully submitted. In case the migration agency needs additional information from the applicant, they will contact him/her.

Step 5: The migration agency proceeds with the application

If you submit all the requirements correctly, there will be less time required for the migration agency to make a decision on your application. In case, you have submitted some of the data after the submission of the application, then you will receive a decision late than the normal duration. 

Regardless of all the requirements fulfilled, the migration agency will ask you to submit the additional information in some cases. 

Step 6: Residence permit card

You will receive a residence permit card if you get permission to live in the state for 3 months. This card will prove that you have full permission to live in Sweden with verified fingerprints and images. Now we will discuss in detail where you will have to go if you need/do not need the entry visa.

If you require an entry visa

If you are required an entry visa to freely travel in Sweden, then you will have to follow these instructions:

  • For the fingerprints and photographs, must go to the Swedish embassy or consulate,
  • In case you already have a permit, then the data of your previous permit will not be there. You will have to go again for the fingerprints and photographs,
  • If you are applying for a permit for your family members too. They will also go with you for the fingerprints and photographs.

If you do not require an entry visa

In this case, you can give the required data for the residence permit card to the Migration agency. This must be done before your landing in Sweden.

Step 8: Getting the decision

If you do not submit the application online

If you are in a situation to not apply online, then you can submit the application with these steps:

  • The applicants who are not in Sweden can apply by fulfilling the application for the work permit. Its number is 149011,
  • The state where the applicant is living, the submission of the application will be there in Embassy or consulate,
  • If there is no Embassy in the area of the applicant, then he/she can apply via embassy from the nearest state,
  • Before the submission of the application, it is mandatory to contact the embassy.

In case, you have received a work permit

Residence permit card

You will receive a residence permit card if you get permission to live in the state for 3 months. This card will prove that you have full permission to live in Sweden with verified fingerprints and images.

Essential information about residence permit card

The card for the residence permit will be issued at the time of the decision. The estimated time is three months before the residence permit becomes operative.

If you require an entry visa for freely traveling in Sweden

In order to get an entry visa for traveling in Sweden, you must go to an embassy or consulate for fingerprints and photographs. 

There are some embassies that do not give this service, so you must contact the embassy first then make a visit. Moreover, must take your passport with you when going to an embassy.

What if your application gets a rejection?

If the Swedish migration agency gives you a final decision with rejection, it means you are not eligible to get a work permit. You will have to go through these instructions in this case:

  • Apply for a lodge for requesting them to change the decision,
  • You will have to submit your lodge request within 20 days after getting the rejection notification,
  • All the information about lodge request will be there in your decision,
  • If you have given someone the authority to request the authorities, he/she can also apply for this.

Rule and regulations for specific occupations and residence of specific state

Special regulations apply to some occupations. Examples include the need to use specified documentation with your application and the usage of a specific form while applying.

If you apply for an EU Blue card or ICT permit, the occupations are,

  • Berry picker
  • Performer
  • Seasonal worker
  • Au pair
  • Athlete
  • Researcher
  • Volunteer
  • Trainee

If you are a resident of certain states, you may be required to get certain forms of visas under bilateral agreements, such as a working holiday visa for youngsters.
