Canada’s Digital Nomad Visa, New Policy by IRCC

As a digital nomad, you can move to Canada easily by fulfilling some basic requirements. Though this visa stream has been in practice for a long time, IRCC has recently announced clear instructions about the requirements and procedure of this visa. Should an applicant and holder of a digital nomad visa in Canada seek a work permit, he can do so by finding an employer and applying for a work permit separately.

If an intention to find a Canadian employer is declared, they should be counseled that a work permit will be needed before starting work for such an employer.

The IRCC made a policy announcement on January 30, stating that digital nomads can stay in Canada on a visitor’s visa for up to six months. IRCC notes that these visa holders should perform their duties remotely for themselves, for a foreign employer, or a client outside of Canada. Digital Nomads are those people who can perform their duties remotely from anywhere worldwide.

Digital Nomads can stay in Canada for up to 6 months and at the time of entry into the country, they even do not have to show extra documents. They can mention that they work as a digital nomad. Anyhow they must prove visa officer that they will leave Canada at the end of their stay.

Family members of a Digital Nomad can also study and work in Canada, but to do so, they must get a first study or work permit.

Canada is interested more and more in attracting new Tech. talent named Tech Talent Strategy from around the world. This is why the new visa stream is called innovation through the International Mobility Program. Anyhow, this may take the government some more time to announce the visa stream with new rules.
