Canada open work permit, new good news for the temporary residency visa to permanent residency pathway. In May, Canada has introduced six new schemes to assist international students, french speakers, and skilled workers for immigration. These schemes are based to provide them a route to stay in Canada for an extra duration.
In other words, the candidates who have applied through these streams for permanent residency, can now also apply for Open Work Permit for applicants under the TR to PR pathway. Since the PR process takes a long time to consider the applications, the new open work permit facility will not only allow temporary immigrants to stay legal but also to work and earn a livelihood.
These open work permits will be valid until December 31, 2022. Also, this permit applies to the family members of applicants. The family members can also stay along with the applicant with this open work permit. Canada’s open work permit allows its holder to work with any employer.
Generally, the candidates who hold a temporary work permit or study permit can apply to these schemes. When the date of expiration is near of any stream of temporary permits they hold, they can apply for an open work permit for sure to continue their legal stay in Canada. These schemes are exactly for these people who had applied for the TR to PR pathways.
Application procedure for Canada Open Work permit
Immigration Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) has updated the detail for the application of these schemes on their official website. The detail of it is mentioned below.
- Who can apply:
The international student graduates, skilled workers, and french speakers who had applied for their permanent residence.
- The exact time to apply:
Those students and workers whose permits are about to expire can apply 4 months before the expiration. The family members can apply at any time, there is no restriction for them.
How to apply for TR to PR Canada Open work permit?
The application procedure is online. In case of any issue, the paper applications will also be accepted but the priority will be given to online application submission. Let’s dive into the step-by-step procedure detail.
- Step-1:
Before applying, open IRRCC instruction guides for more accuracy. There will be required:
- Acrobat Reader to view pdf files,
- Documents scanning facility,
- A credit card to pay the charges.
- Step-2:
Before the application start, you will have to pay $155 charges on the official website. These charges will be with the concession of $100.
- Step-3:
You will have to log in to the IRCC account. After this, you will be given an option of “APPLY”. You will click it and your application will start.
- Sep-4:
The application will start with the questions that you will have to select with the proper care. We will give you thorough instructions on some questions you will have to select if you are a student or a worker.

- Step-5:
The IRCC instruction guides will help you to fill the application form and document checklist.
You will have to select the option of “Application to extend the stay as a worker in Canada”. Then select “Openwork permit”. After that, enter the name of your stream and your work in the description box.
There will also be a box for the duration of expected employment, you will select the date 31 December 2022. Before this date, you will be legally allowed to live in Canada.
- Step-6:
You will have to upload the documents. Here is the list of documents:
- A copy of the receipt of the charges you paid;
- Verification of your legal job;
- A passport copy;
- A clear image;
- A paper comprises of your family detail;
- Marriage/Birth certificate.
- The application form for family members:
The form to apply for an open work permit for the family members of the applicant is IMM 0008. The names of the family members will be there as provided by the applicant. The family members will select the portal of their name.
Procedure after applying
When you are done with your application, there will be one of two possibilities:
- Incomplete Application:
After the submission of the application, there will be one officer specified to check your application. If they will consider your application invalid. Then you will be asked to send more information.
- Verified application:
If the officer will consider your application valid. They will inform you via email that you will provide. After that, the permit will be sent to your given address, The permit will carry the information about the type and the duration of the job you can do in the specific time period.
The six schemes have a set of two. One set of three schemes applies to English speakers and has limited seats for application. The second set of three schemes applies to French speakers and the seats available are unlimited.
