Types f Studienkollegs in Germany
There are two types of preparatory colleges, university colleges and technical colleges.
Studienkolleg of University and
Anyone who has successfully attended a university college can then study at a university or technical college.
Studienkolleg of Technical College (for Universities of Applied Sciences)
Anyone who has attended a technical college cannot usually attend a university but can attend a technical college. Graduates can apply for study places throughout Germany.

Status of Studienkollegs
In addition to the distinction between university and technical college colleges, a difference can also be made between private and state preparatory colleges. State preparatory colleges usually offer free study places – apart from the semester fee – and their qualifications are recognized throughout Germany. Private preparatory colleges often charge fees for attending the college and it is important to find out whether the private preparatory college you choose even offers a state-recognized degree.
Choosing between a University or a Technical College Studienkollegs?
It depends on many factors to choose a University of University of Applied Sciences Studienkolleg. International students have the choice between university and technical college colleges. If you want to study at a university later, you should attend a university college. “Fachhochschulkolleg graduates” are then only allowed to study at universities of applied sciences. This should therefore be determined before attending the preparatory college.
