Major requirements for a work visa

There are certain major requirements that you need to fulfill in order to get a work visa. Following are the main:

  • A job offer from an Estonian employer
  • A standard recognized work contract from an employer in Estonia
  • Permission of the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund for employment (if required)
  • Invitation by the employer – shall be completed by the employer and submitted to the Police and Border Guard Board
  • There is a certain requirement that you need to fulfill for applying as a top specialist

Who can apply for a work visa?

The foreigners can apply for a work or temporary residence permit in many conditions. All of these have certain requirements. This could be done only if you want to work with an employer who is registered in Estonia for scientific or research work. The main reasons may be as follows:

  • working as an employee transferred within an undertaking
  • employed as a temporary agency worker
  • on the basis of the European Union (EU) blue card
  • for scientific research
  • for employment as a top specialist
  • working at a start-up
  • With the consent of the Estonian unemployment insurance fund and by matching the salary criteria
  • consent of Estonian unemployment insurance fund and not matching the salary threshold criteria
  • Settling to work as an expert, consultant, or advisor (professional qualification is mandatory) without consent of Estonian unemployment insurance fund but fulfilling the salary criteria
  • Applying for shortage occupations, listed by Government and without the consent of Estonian unemployment insurance fund but fulfilling the salary criteria

Work visa required documents

You can either apply for a national visa ‘D’ type or a temporary residence permit of Estonia for the reason for work. In most cases, the stay in Estonia extending one year allows you to apply for a temporary residence visa. But it all depends upon the Estonian representation in your countries such as an embassy, or consulate. In all cases, you must provide the following documents:

A visa application form. Filled in in computer and then printed and signed. So signing the form means you have a minimum set aside income in Estonia and have had a health insurance contract (read here all instructions)

  • Application for a temporary residence permit if you are applying for it too
  • Data of close relatives and family members
  • Personal passport with a standard validity period
  • A passport-sized photograph
  • Embassy visa fees
  • A standard recognized work contract from an employer in Estonia
  • Permission of the Estonian Unemployment Insurance Fund for employment (if required)
  • Invitation by the employer – shall be completed by the employer and submitted to the Police and Border Guard Board
  • Proof of English language if required by the employer
