List of Studienkollegs in Germany

If you are an international student and do not hold the required qualifications to study in a German university, then you will have to study in a Studienkolleg for one year. This is also called a foundation course. The Studienkollegs function as a “bridge” to help you move from the academic culture of your home country to German academic culture.

Here is the list of all Studienkollegs (study college) in Germany with the details of the province, the city they are situated in, courses they offer, their websites, and email addresses:

Types of Studienkollegs in Germany

There are 2 types of studienkollegs in Germany:

  1. University Studienkollegs (for theoratical based studies)
  2. University of Applied Sciences Studienkollegs (for professional based studies)

If you have successfully attended a university college, you can study at a university or college. Anyone who has attended a University of Applied Sciences Studienkolleg can study in a university of applied sciences.

State and private Studienkollegs

In addition to the distinction between university and college colleges, it is also possible to differentiate between private and state Studienkollegs. As a rule, state Studienkollegs offer free study places, apart from the semester contribution fee, and their degree is recognized throughout Germany. Beware of this really important fact. Private Studienkollegs often charge fees for the collegiate visit and it is important to know well whether the selected private Studienkolleg offers a state-recognized degree.

It’s up to you which studienkolleg you choose for you. Surely it’s your choice, but if you do choose a private studienkolleg, then make sure it’s state-recognized.

Step by Step Application Process in a StudienKolleg

Step 1- Qualification Assessment

Check your qualification if it gives you eligibility to study in a University directly. You can do it by going on to this website http://anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html. If you do not find your institution on this database website, it means you do not qualify for direct admission into a degree program. This surely happens when you do not necessarily have 13 years of education to study directly in a university (conditions apply however for many countries, see details here http://anabin.kmk.org/anabin.html). In this case, you will surely have to study for a year at studienkolleg.

Step 2- Direct or Indirect Admission Application

Applying directly to studienkolleg or through Uni-Assist is the next step. You will have to get information on the webpage of your desired studienkolleg as if they will give you a direct admission facility or you will have to get admission through uni-assist (this organization does charge a minimum of 70 Euros for the admission process). You can get more info about uni-assist by clicking on this link https://www.uni-assist.de/

Step 3- Gathering Documents

Ask your desired uni about the required documents you have to send them for the admission process. For example, you must present your higher education school-leaving certification plus German language proficiency test proof with a minimum level of B1. This process may take a lot of time so prepare well in advance so that the deadline can be caught without any problem.

Step 4- Applying for Visa

Apply for the visa once you get the admission offer letter along with all other necessary documents. The visa process may take some time to process (ideally 3 to 8 weeks).

Step 5- Preparing for Entry Test (Aufnahmeprüfung)

Prepare for the entry test (Aufnahmeprüfung) well in advance. Your desired or chosen studienkolleg gives you a sample test so that you can have an idea of how it works. The entry test can be for the German language or Mathematics or for both.

Step 6- Attending the Aufnahmeprüfung

Take the entry test. In some countries, there is a possibility of outpost for entry exams but for 90% students it is mandatory to be in Germany for an entry test. After passing the entry test you will be prepared by your studienkolleg for the chosen course so that you can get admission to a university for a bachelor’s degree.
