27 EUropean Countries Issued 1.2 Million Work Visas for Non-Citizens

EU issued over 1 million first Resident Permits Employment-Related Reasons for third-country citizens last year.

A residence permit represents a permit issued by a competent national authority that allows a citizen of a non-member (non-EU) called the third country to stay on their territory for more than three months. ۔ Data on residency permits are collected along with information on the reasons for issuing such permits. In 2019, Poland remained the first country to issue most residence permits for work purposes, a total of 625,000.

How many work visas were issued?

The range of third-country people who have joined the EU’s workforce the last year is huge. More than a million employees have moved to EU 27 member states for employment. In a new report on the first residence permit issued in EU 27 in 2019, the European Union statistics office stated that year a maximum of three million first residence permits was issued out of which 1.2 million permits will be issued for employment associated reasons. Poland stood out tall by issuing 6 times more work visa based residence permits.

An interesting fact is that the range of first residence permits for employment features has accelerated by 21.7% or 214,000 first permits in contrast to last year, 2018. 

Poland last year issued more residence permits to non-EU immigrants than any other member state. This is the third year in a row that Poland has led the European Union, reflecting an unparalleled wave of immigration.

Poland with 625 000 permits for non-EU residents was by a long way the main destination in the EU-27 for those searching to reap a residence permit for employment-related reasons. In fact, the number of permits issued in Poland for employment-related reasons is 10 times higher than in other countries. Czechia issued the second most work visas 66,000, Germany remained third with 66,000 permits and Spain came at number 4 with 63,000 work permits.

In 2019, Ukrainians were granted the largest number of residence permits in the 27th EU for employment-related reasons (660,000), with a majority (83.6%) granted in Poland.

How does the first residence permit work?

The first permit Residence permit is issued to a person for the first time for an EU country. This does not include the extensions of the first TRP. A residence permit is believed as a first permit also if the period hole between the expiry of the previous permit and the start of validity of a new permit issued for the same reason is at least six months. First residency permits issued by an EU member state allows citizens of non-EU countries (also called third-country citizens) to stay on their territory for at least 3 months. The latest report on the issuance of the first residence permits to third-country nationals by Eurostat, the European Union’s statistics office shows that 3 million non-EU citizens were issued residence permits to stay in the bloc last year. According to the report, the number of first residence permits issued in 2019 increased by 6.0%, including a further 163,000 permits issued by member countries, with Poland topping the list. The increase in the total number of first residence permits from year to year was mainly due to the increasing number of first permits issued.
