UK secures the rights of millions of EU citizens through EU Settlement Scheme

EU Settlement Scheme comes to end by reaching the final deadline. The UK has been able to secure the rights of more than 6 million EU citizens. A total of 5.4 million applicants are granted status. Now the EU citizens will be required to hold an ID issued by the UK government instead of showing the EU ID or Passport. UK set more time for the EU citizens to be settled in the UK (2019-2021) instead of EU countries that only ran the settlement scheme for the UK citizens for about a year.

EUSS details

For the citizens of the EU living in the UK, there was announced a deadline by the government till Wednesday 30 June 2021. They must have applied for their settlement before the deadline. This EUSS was started on 30 March 2019.

A huge amount of applications about 400,000 have alone been submitted in June only through the EU settlement scheme which approximately leaves 570,000 applications unprocessed. The people who have applied for the status by the ending date will receive a certificate that can be used as a legal document of living in the UK after 30 June 2021. This is because now the EU citizens will have to show the UK documents (that prove a right of the in the UK) showing “Settled” or “Pre-Settled” status instead of an EU ID or Passport.

Ministers said that those applicants who have submitted their applications before the deadline are secured for their residence status until the application is under process. On the other hand, many workers claim that the deadline for applying must be increased because they are facing many issues with the public facilities. Due to which they are unable to apply before the deadline.

According to the rules of Britain deviation from the European Union, the residents of the EU living in the UK for the job or work are unable to travel freely to the EU now due to Brexit. They are required to apply for the EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) in order to get their permanent lawful residence in the country. The citizens of the European Economic Area (EEA) were also affected by it.

When the applicants will be succeeded to get their legal residence status through EUSS, they will be facilitated with the benefits of NHS, study, public funds, and free traveling outside the EU without any restriction.

Approximately 2.7 million applicants successfully got their residence permits and given the settled status. The remaining 2.2 million applicants have given pre-settled status. The citizens of the EU were given a chance with the deadline of 30 June to apply for residence in the UK. They could either apply to get settled status or the pre-settled status.

If someone could not apply for the status in time

UK authorities have announced that they may give concessions to those who have solid and genuine reasons not to apply by the deadline. This means if an applicant who may be eligible for the EUSS and has not made an application is encountered by Immigration Enforcement, they will be issued with a notice giving them a further opportunity, generally 28 days, to apply to the EUSS, and will be signposted to the support available to do so.

What is Settled Status for EU Settlement Scheme

This status has been given to 2.8 million applicants. Its basic requirement is to verify that you have a residence in the UK for a minimum of 5 years (the time after 2021 does not count towards eligibility).

What is Pre-Settled Status for EU Settlement Scheme

This status has been given to 2.3 million applicants. Its basic requirement is to verify that you have a residence in the UK of less than 5 years. (the time after 2021 does not count towards eligibility). After getting pre-settled status, applicants can also apply to get the settled status as well.

Disqualified applicants under EU Settlement Scheme

The authorities have disqualified approximately 94,000 applications due to invalid information about the residence.

The legations for those who will not apply under EU Settlement Scheme

Those who were unable to apply regardless of any reason will face many difficulties which are:

  • They will be considered unauthorized to work,
  • They will not have a chance to use public facilities as well,
  • They will have to pay the fee for NHS services.

The reality about the late applications

Those who have applied but whose application is unprocessed should consider themselves secure according to the authorities. They will have to prove that they have submitted the application before the 30th of June.

The number of the applications was less than approximately 3.7 million when the program was open till May. As the deadline passed, the workers claimed to extend the date for applying. Then the date was extended. The number of late applications was much more approximately 5.7 million as compared to earlier.
