EU Countries see the highest ratio of immigrants up to 5.1 Million in 2022. This is an incredible increase of 112 percent compared to 2021 (2.4 Million). This brings the overall population of immigrants to 27.3 million in the EU as of 1 January 2023 out of a total of 448 million EU population.
The net migration remains with a large difference. Most of the reasons for rushing towards are social, political, economic, employment, and religious reasons. All 27 EU countries saw an increase in immigration this mentioned year.
The statistics have been released as per the annual statistics reports of Eurostat. Malta received in terms of population the highest numbers of immigrants whereas Slovakia remained at the lowest. Czechia remained at the top as per the highest ratio of immigrants from non-EU countries up to 95.2%, followed by Lithuania at 91.3% and Latvia at 89.5%.
The number of people who emigrated from the EU to non-EU countries remained at 1.0 Million sams as of 2021. As per population ratio, for 1,000 EU residents in EU countries, 11 counted towards the total population.
With an increase of around 7% compared with 2021, about 1.5 million people previously residing in one EU Member State migrated to another Member State in 2022.
EU Countries with Most Immigrants as of 2022
Germany topped the category with the highest number of immigrants in 2022. The numbers are as follows:
- Germany: 2.1 million
- Spain: 1.3 million
- France and Italy: 0.4 million
EU Countries with the highest Emigration
Germany also topped the highest immigration numbers in 2022. The top 5 were:
- Germany: 533,500
- Spain: 531,900
- France: 249,400
- Poland: 228,000
- Romania: 202,300
Countries that received the highest immigrant ratio per population
Malta outclassed all other countries in terms of ratio per population. There were 66 immigrants for every 1,000 residents in Malta. Luxembourg had 48 and Estonia 37 per 1,000 residents in 2022.
Countries with the lowest immigrant ratio per population
Slovakia topped the category with only 1 immigrant against 1,000 residents. Bulgaria and France remained second and third with only 6 immigrants out of 1,000.
Foreign-Born Population in 2023
As of January 2023, Luxembourg has the highest foreign-born population up to 50.4%. At number 2 was Malta with 28.3% and Cyprus with 22.7%.
In absolute terms, Germany’s foreign-born immigrants from EU and non-EU countries were 16.5 million. France had 8.9 and Spain 8.2 million.
The lowest ratio of foreign-born immigrants was in:
- Poland: 2.5%
- Romania: 2.6%
- Bulgaria: 2.8%
Foreign-born immigrants in non-EU countries came with the highest shares recorded in Malta (20.9%), followed by Luxembourg (17.2%). Ireland, Sweden, and Estonia recorded a 15.2% share each. For the same category, Slovakia (1%), Bulgaria and Romania (1.7% each) remained at the bottom.
