The Australian government set the permanent migration level plans to 190,000 places from 2023 to 2024. This is 5,000 less than announced for the previous year’s terms. The goal like every year is to attract professionals with astonishing skill sets to move to Australia. It also addresses the shortage of skilled labor in the specific occupational sectors. This quota is however planned and it is not known if the country will get to fulfill it or not.
Insight into Migration Level Plans 2023-2024 Quota
According to the insights of the migration level plan of 2023–24, the composition is as follows:
- 400 places have been reserved for the Special Eligibility stream. It consists of the visa programs for those in special circumstances. This also includes permanent residents returning to Australia after a period overseas.
- Skill stream has the biggest quota reservation up to 72 percent of the whole program. About 137,100 places have been assigned to this stream. It consists of visa and PR programs for the betterment of the productive capacity of the economy and it also fills skill shortages in the Australian labor market (including regional Australia);
- The second highest percentage (28%) is assigned to the “Family Stream”. This makes it to almost 52,500 places. This category helps Partner visas, enabling Australians to reunite with family members from overseas and provide them with pathways to citizenship. This category is also further divided into “Partner Visas” 40,500 (demand-driven category), and 3,000 places have been reserved for the “Child Visas” stream.

State and territory-nominated visa categories

- Business Innovation and Investment Program (BIIP). No allocations have been made available for this category this year.
- Skilled – Nominated (subclass 190)
- Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) (subclass 491)
Through these reserved places, the territories and states can nominate new primary applicants in the year. A special thing about this category is that the number of allocated nominations does not reflect the total number of visa applicants in this category nor does it limit the number of visas issues in the planned year 2023-2024.
