PMSOL was first introduced in September 2020 in collaboration with National Skills Commission. With the addition of 22 more professions, there are now 44 total professions on this list.
The Australian government also added Civil engineers, software operators, and chefs to this list. The authorities will give important consideration to their visa applications.
According to Alex Hawke, the qualified and skilled workers will assist the state with their skills. They will improve the condition of the state, which is facing a lot of issues due to going COVID-19 pandemic.
He said that “The Morrison Government will continue to support Australian businesses, including through skilled migration, as the engine room of our nation’s economy,”
According to Hawke, business holders and industry owners of Australia gave their statements demanding the skilled workers for the vacant posts. The solid reason behind the addition of more professions was this.
The companies who gladly accepted this policy include Two of the nation’s peak hospitality bodies and the Australian Resources and Energy Group (AMMA). Their opinion was positive about this addition. They said that this will surely overcome the lack of skilled workers in the state.
The restaurant’s owners and tourism corporations requested the government of Australia to include the chefs in the PMSOL.
National CEO of AHA, Stephen Ferguson gave his statement, “Our international borders remain closed and we cannot approach the usual stream of international chefs who are the essential part of our work,”
The CEO of AMMA, Steve Knott said there is also a need to add the engineer’s majors in petroleum, mining, and geotechnical. The reason is they will overcome the lack of skilled workers in the field of energy and resources.
Visa holders will manage the quarantine expenditures on their own
As the government of Australia has closed the borders for the international migrants due to COVID-19, there will come a change. The fact is the impact of the pandemic will be minimal temporarily.
According to the budget of May 2020, the Australian government hopes that the number of migrants (temporary and permanent) will slowly increase till 2022.
Australia’s net immigration fell into the negative zone for the first time since World War II last year. The reason is the ban on travel due to Covid-19. According to the predictions, the state will be in the normal condition as it was before COVID-19 in the upcoming 2 years at least.
According to Mr. Hawke, the entrance of international skilled workers will be the main reason to recover the state from the pandemic. He further said, “I’m convinced that the migration program will be a huge part of how we recover from COVID and whether we will be as successful as we can be on that journey. We are focused at the moment on what the migration program needs to look like to support recovery.”
Quarantine preparations shall be made on behalf of visa holders. These visa holders will be those who have been authorized by an Australian business in a PMSOL occupation.
According to the government of Australia, the list of current skilled migration will also be in process. Moreover, the first consideration will be given to the professions listed in the PMSOL.
Modifications in working holiday visas
Additionally, Mr. Hawke said that the government will make improvements to the Working Holiday Maker (WHM) program. The purpose of these improvements will be to solve labor challenges in northern and rural areas of the state. To be qualified for an extension, working holiday visa holders must currently complete 88 days of approved employment.
These visa holders who work in those specific fields in the tourism and hospitality sector will now be eligible to prolong their stay in Australia. They will do so on the basis of their employment. From March 2022, WHMs who register extension applications will have the alternative option.
