Croatia has increased the annual quota for work permits in 2020. The decision has been made from the Croatian government on 22 November 2019 to cover up the shortage of the labor force especially in the sector of tourism and construction. The new immigration policy will help the country to get skilled workers from around the world. The labor minister announced that the Croatian government will issue 40,000 extra visas in 2020. This will take the normal quota to 103,740 as a whole.
“25,000 work permits will be released as extensions of current employers and the rest of 78,470 will be given to Non-EU workers for new employment”.
Most of the work permit next year, 33,300, will be allocated to the construction sector, while 30,370 will go to the tourism sector. Croatia has been facing a labor shortage for certain occupations over the past few years. Ever since it has got the membership of the EU block, more and more young educated people are leaving for Germany and Ireland for more money and a secure future. The government has finally taken some good steps in order to cover this shortage. It has already increased the quota to 17,000 in December 2018. But this too was not enough for the growing sectors specially Tourismwhere 20 Million people visit Croatia from around the world each year. The labor minister has been authorized to extend by up to 5,000 work permits each the quota for the construction and the tourism sector in 2020 if needed.
