Yiva Johansson, the European Commissioner specified for Home affairs declared that she is on a mission to save the 300 million Euros for the 30,000 non-EU citizen migrants’ accommodations. On the other hand, the European parliament also authorized two funds, a total of 10 billion for the betterment of new entries and border control until 2027.
Due to COVID-19, no applications were being accepted for new accommodations from the past year.
Now on the 9th July, the EU Commissioner for Home affairs Yiva Johanson gave her statement in a seminar. The purpose of the seminar was to announce the reopening of the legal routes for the foreigners who want to be settled in the EU but was failed due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
In her statement, she highlighted that she is on a mission to secure €300 million for the 30,000 non-EU citizen migrants’ accommodations. She cleared that this mission will be completed at the end of 2022.
In her speech, she demanded the contribution of an extra budget for the member countries of the EU. She also demanded that we all should make promises to provide the new asylums to those who are facing tough times for their settlement in the EU due to the COVID-19.
She further added that “ This is my holy mission now and afterward to legally implement these promises with the help of the government.”
In this seminar, the Italian Interior Minister Luciana Lamorgese, US secretary of Homeland Security Alejandro Mayorkas, and UN High commissioner for accommodations Filippo Grandi were also present. Grandi requested Europe to provide accommodations to a minimum of 36,000 foreigners in 2022.
Yiva Johansson supported the request of Grandi saying “ This should be implemented as soon as possible”
European parliament’s funds for Asylum, Migration, and Integration
The European parliament authorized two funds, a total of nearly 10 billion Euros for the betterment of new entries of immigrants and border control until 2027. According to authorities, one fund of 9.88 billion will be invested to improve the strategies for new entries. The other fund is 6 billion Euros will be invested in the betterment of border control policies.
Yiva Johansson also discussed this fund by saying,
“ With the help of these funds, the policies for the approval of new entries will be improved. It will grow the legal strategies for the migration rate according to the demand of member countries. It will help non-EU citizen foreigners to settle down here. Furthermore, it is an excellent step to end the irregularity of the migration rate due to COVID-19.
She further added, “From this fund, some part should be invested to improve the strategies for the welcome of the newcomers in the EU. The member countries should be strictly responsible as a host for the newcomers across the EU. The 63.5% of this fund will be invested in the programs arranged by the EU and member states for the betterment of the migrant flow.”
She clarified that the fund will be divided into each member state onbased onhese points:
- The number of non-EU citizens living there,
- The number of applications received for accommodation,
- The expulsion rate from the state.
How many funds are approved for the border administration?
For the border administration, the fund of a total of 6 billion is approved for the upcoming 7 years.
Tanja Fojan, a Slovenian member of the European parliament who is the team member of the Progressive Alliance of Socialists and democrats also gives her statement on the approval of this fund. She said, “ The approval of these funds shows that the government of the EU is not just concerned about the new accommodations but is thinking for the betterment of the policies of borders.”
What are the motives behind the approval of the border fund?
The EU parliament illustrated the motives of this fund on their official website, which are:
- It will improve the external border management,
- It will help to balance out the visa policy,
- It will assist to ensure the security of the newcomers at the border especially unaccompanied children.
