Germany needs 400,000 Skilled Workers Per Year

Germany needs 400,000 skilled workers each year. Germany’s new coalition government aims to recruit 400,000 skilled workers from abroad each year to address both a demographic imbalance and labor shortages in key sectors that threaten to undermine the recovery from the coronavirus pandemic.

FDP parliamentary group leader Christian Dürr said on the occassion of Wirtschaftswoche:

“The shortage of skilled workers has become so great that it is having a massive impact on our economy. We can only get the problem of aging under control, workers through modern immigration policy. We have to reach the target of 400,000 foreign professionals per year as soon as possible,”.

In their coalition agreement, Chancellor Olaf Scholz’s Social Democrats, Dürr’s liberal FDP, and the Greens Greens have agreed on measures such as a point system for skilled workers from countries outside the European Union and raising the national minimum wage to 12 euros per hour worked, making Germany more attractive.

According to data from the German Institute for Economic Research, Germany’s labor force will shrink by more than 300,000 this year as more retirees than young people enter the labor market. The gap is expected to widen to more than 650,000 by 2029. By 2030, the shortage of working-age labor force will reach about 5 million.

This issue has previously been also discussed by the government and immigration authorities. In August 2021, Employment agency boss Detlef Scheele warns that Germany is running out of skilled workers. Therefore, workers from abroad should be integrated. He at that time also added that Germany’s labor market needs around 400,000 immigrants a year. That would be significantly more than in previous years. It’s not about asylum, but about immigration into the labor market.”From nursing to air conditioning technicians to logisticians and academics: There will be a lack of skilled workers everywhere.”

The Protestant social association Diakonie said that Germany finally needs a new vision for a modern country with people who bring enriching differences with them. “Integration into the labor market works, but it is not a sure-fire success, it also requires political will and investments in differentiated German courses, migration advice, and support programs for employment integration,” said President Ulrich Lilie. If, for example, refugees from Afghanistan set off, Germany should do its part to make it easier for them to find employment.

In 2020, 44,800 foreign qualifications were recognized nationwide as fully or partially equivalent to German qualifications. That was 5 percent more than in the previous year. Around two-thirds of these professional qualifications were in medical professions.

On March 1, 2020, the Skilled Immigration Act came into force. It provides for accelerated procedures for the recognition of foreign professional qualifications. Criticism of this came from the spokesman for labor market policy for the FDP parliamentary group in the Bundestag, Johannes Vogel. He spoke of a “poor” law that does not come close to doing justice to the importance of the task. “We finally have to get better in the global competition for talent – and for this, we need modern immigration law with a point system, like Canada and New Zealand have been doing for a long time.”
