Portugal Renews International Student Visas of Many Through New Automatic System

RENEWAL OF 3600 HIGER EDUCATION STUDENTS UNDER NEW AUTOMATIC RENEWAL SYSTEM

In November 2020, the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) introduced a new function in the portal SEF (www.sef.pt) for online renewal of residence permits for foreign students, (third-country nationals in higher education in Portugal). The new event covers about 22,000 foreign students of higher education, whose residency permits meet the requirements for digital renewal the visa-guru.com reports.
In a simple way in the “Personal Area” of the portal SEF, students of universities and polytechnic universities can now go to the function of “automatic renewal” of their residence permit. That way, the applicants (international students) will no longer have to go to the attendance bureau.

How it is done?

It is necessary to verify the request for renewal in Portal SEF. The service will then make every effort to verify the applicant’s good reputation with security advice, as well as consult with the necessary databases to determine compliance with the requirements. After paying the fees, the citizen will obtain a residence permit at the address provided.

SEF (English: Foreign and Borders Service) is an integrated police service in the Ministry of the Interior, whose mission is to enforce immigration and asylum in Portugal in accordance with the provisions of the Constitutional, Legal, and Government Guidelines. Among other duties, SEF is a controlling agency responsible for controlling the border and issuing residence permits to foreign nationals legally residing in Portugal.

About 3,600 students from national universities and polytechnic universities have already used the new function to automatically renew their residence permits in 7 days. Most of the students are of the Portuguese-speaking Community (CPLP). The Immigration and Borders Service (SEF) expanded the new event to foreign students, third-country nationals attending higher education in Portugal held in  September 2019.

Easily on the portal SEF’s “Personal Area”, through this tool, the applicants can apply for automatic renewal of the residence permit.  After payment, the one obtains a residence permit at the address provided. In July this year, SEF released this new function for automatic renewal of residence permits for citizens with professional activities, which, with this new tool, has so far increased to 66,000. The excess residency permit has been renewed.
