Study in Canada: Universities to Open for Fall Semester

Are Canadian universities coming back on track to start classes in-person? Yes, they want to start classes in-person, but all this depends partially on the public health authority and each organization’s management. A report of 2020 tells that approximately 65% of new international students enrolments at Canadian post-secondaries in the 2018-2019 school year were at universities. The following information is about Canadian universities that are planning to make their official announcements soon and those who are welcoming students back to campus.

Canada issued many residence permits for study permits during the last five years. In 2015 Canada issued 352,365 study permits, in 2016 almost 410,690, in 2017 about 491,135 in 2018 about 568,130 and in 2019 almost 642,480 (stats. courtesy canada.ca).

Institutions of Alberta

The University of Alberta expects more students and staff to be welcomed on campus this fall, relying on a mix of personal and distance learning. A University of Calgary spokesman told CIC News: “The University of Calgary has not yet made a decision on how to deliver classes (face-to-face or online) for the fall 2021 semester. Hopefully, an announcement will be made next month and will then be communicated to students and the campus community. The University of Late Bridge is planning a “significant return to campus” this fall but says it may maintain the health guidelines and physical distance associated with the use of some masks.

Institutions of British Columbia

One week ago in an announcement, the BC Health Minister put the health and safety of students and staff at the forefront of his plan. He advised the post-secondary schools in the province to be ready for a full return to campus activities. Following this announcement, many B.C. Universities have announced plans to return to individual classes the University of BC looking to return in–person classes and expand in-person research in the fall. The University of British Columbia is also planning to oblige isolation preparations for foreign students if required, and options for on-site immunization. Following universities are planning to permit in-person classes in the coming next 5 to 6 month:

Institutions of Saskatchewan 

The virus has made the situation uncertain. In this environment, it would be premature to announce anything said by the president of the University of Saskatchewan, Peter Stoicheff. However, he is hoping for a full return to in-person classes at the end of 2022.

Institutions of Manitoba

The University of Bardon, the University of Manitoba, and the University of Winnipeg have not declared any official details on returning to in-person instruction. The registrar of the University of Bardon, Andrea McDaniel said in a public release “our intention is to announce a course of action for fall this year that we can commit to, without needing to backtrack or pivot midway through the term

.Institutions of Ontario  

The University of Toronto is looking to allow in-person supports and instructions for students in the fall. The staff of the university and librarians are expected to return to campus. Students will be able to research on campus with necessary SOPs. According to a media release, Brooke University plans to offer a wide range of courses on campus, including labs and other experimental education, graduate seminars, and undergraduate classes. According to CBC News, the University of Ottawa will equip classrooms with technology that will facilitate both personal and video conferencing education. The University of Ottawa expects to provide a full on-campus experience that Will offer more courses on or in “hybrid formats”.Western University and the University of Windsor are also planning to come back to face-to-face instructions and provide more on-campus activities.

Institutions of Quebec

Quebec announced a few days ago that universities and CEGEPs could gradually return in person one day a week. They will allow the institute to follow standard coronary virus operating procedures such as physical distance measures, student and staff wear face masks by the government, etc. Concordia University is indicating to provide both in-person and online classes in May 2021. McGill University is expecting to come back to in-person classes in September. Some courses will continue to incorporate online teaching. But the university says students and staff should prepare to return to “more regular patterns” of campus activity.

Institutions of Nova Scotia

Acadia University is looking for a full comeback to campus this fall. Students and employees are asked to start preparing for in-person studies. Many programs may begin the term in a Virtual or hybrid format and will move to complete in-classes later in the term. Dalhousie University wants that class size limitations may keep larger lecture classes online. In a report, the institute says it is expecting to provide in-person study activities of a maximum of 100 people, for example, labs, tutorials, and small to medium level groups.

Institutions of Prince Edward Island

According to CBC report, the University of Prince Edward Island is looking to come back to “more normal” study conditions this fall.

Institutions of Newfoundland and Labrador

Memorial University is already resuming its personal research work after rejecting its decision to return to work individually this February. A spokesman told CIC News that the university expects to make an announcement soon on whether it will return to private parties this fall.
