The UK has announced to resettle 20,000 Afghan nationals. In the first phase of this scheme, 5,000 people will be resettled and then subsequently 20,000 altogether in upcoming years. The government is willing to providing protection for vulnerable people fleeing Afghanistan. Though the scheme is not yet open it is in the final stage to be implemented.
The official name of this scheme is the Afghan citizens’ resettlement scheme (ACRS). The UK Home Office is planning it with international partners. The program will not only significantly help and support those at risk but also the girls and the women. It will be important how the individuals to receive safe passage from Afghanistan
According to the UK Home Office’s press release,
“Vulnerable Afghan citizens who were called forward by FCDO but could not be evacuated will be guaranteed a place under our Afghan citizens’ resettlement scheme”.
Other routes and support programs from the UK
On the other hand, the Afghan Relocations and Assistance Policy (ARAP) is for Afghans who have supported British efforts in Afghanistan, for example, interpreters and other personnel. This Policy (ARAP) was launched on 1 April 2021. Under the policy, any current or former locally employed staff who are assessed to be under serious threat to life are offered priority relocation to the UK regardless of their employment status, rank or role, or length of time served.
Afghan support programs from other countries
Canada has committed to resettling 20,000 Afghan nationals. The Liberal party of Justin Trudeau has planned to welcome 20,000 Afgan Asylum seekers if he wins the elections. On the other hand, no other major party is against this announcement.
Australia’s visa for Afghan nationals through the Humanitarian and Migration program is the policy by the government. A special quota from Humanitarian Program has been set aside with the initial limit of 3,000. The Afghan nationals can also apply for the visa from Afghanistan and from other countries.
