Types of universities

  • Universities of applied sciences

In such types of universities, focus is mainly on professional application than of theory. Such type of universities are called Fachhochschulen and Hochschulen für angewandte Wissenschaften in German language. Mainly taught subjects here are training oriented for example economics, computer science, social sciences, and medicine etc. As per current statistics, on average 1 million of students are currently studying in 246 universities of applied science. 

  • Universities

The universities are typically theory based institutions where more focus is given to theory, ideas and research. Some universities are however subject specialization based which are called technical universities such as  Technische Universität Hamburg. Other type of universities are universities of education (Pädagogische Hochschule, PH) where teacher training programs are run. As per latest statistics, there currently almost 1.9 million students studying in all such type of universities.

  • Colleges of arts, film, and music

As the name shows the types of subjects taught in their colleges and Institution. The taught subjects are music, architecture, visual arts, drama, dance, industrial and fashion design etc. Mostly taught programs here are in German language and there may be an entrance exam to get admission here.

  • Dual universities

There are many universities in Germany that taught dual degree programs. These programs include a part of studies as theory based and a part of course as working on a professional premises.

Tuition free universities?

There are a lot of tuition free universities in Germany and important thing is that you will have to check first which country offers such courses. Most of universities just charge €200 to €700 as semester contribution. So if you also want to study in Germany without tuition fees, then Germany could the best option for you.
